Why am I walking for our kids?
*Our kids have a constitutionally mandated right to a "sound, basic education".
*Students in our state have lost 5.9 billion dollars in funding.
*Underfunding of our schools has cost our kids in loss of programs, teachers, counselors, arts programs, and sports programs.
*Unfunded mandates cause school districts to use funds that could be used to support or rebuild programs.
*Our children in grades 3-8 have lost out on developmentally appropriate learning experiences because they have to "sit" for 105 hours of testing. Time spent preparing for these high stakes tests cause stress and use valuable learning time.
It is time to stand up for our kids and ask our leaders to "walk in our shoes".
Respect public education and all those involved; teachers, students, administrators and parents.
The journey will begin in Saranac Lake and end at the capital in Albany, NY, approximately 150 miles.
